What Is Federal Workers Compensation?

Federal Workers Compensation is part of the Federal Employees Compensation Act or FECA. It shares many similarities with the workers compensation laws that apply to private employees.

An individual becomes entitled to the federal type of workers compensation if they sustained either an injury or an illness as a result of them fulfilling the duties related to the job they have with the federal government. Injuries or illnesses you sustain from traveling because of your job will still be covered by the law.

In the case of death stemming from the injury and/or illness, the dependents of the federal employee will be the ones to receive the benefits.

We’ll get into what those benefits are in a bit.

It is important to note here that the person seeking federal compensation must be a direct employee of the government. If you are working on a government project managed by a private contractor, you will still have to seek compensation through the other laws, according to Disability Secrets.

Two agencies are in charge of providing the benefits involved in the federal compensation program. They are the Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Program (OWCP) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

What Are the Benefits Included in the Federal Workers Compensation Program?

Included among the benefits that a federal employee may receive after they sustain either an illness or an injury are those of the medical variety. The benefits include hospital, medical, and surgical services. Supplies that are required to treat the injury or illness sustained from their work will also be provided.

The federal employee seeking compensation will also be allowed to choose the physician they receive care from. If you want to change physicians after you already chose one, the move must first be authorized by the OWCP.

The OWCP physicians you receive care from include doctors, surgeons, clinical psychologists, dentists, podiatrists, optometrists, and osteopathic practitioners. You can also seek care from a medical injury doctor if you so desire.
